In Hungary, it is estimated that one woman dies every week as a result of domestic violence. While the number of registered crimes continues to rise, only one-third of cases lead to prosecution. However, the vast majority of cases never come to the attention of the police. This is due to negligence, victim-blaming, and hostile attitudes encountered during police and legal procedures. Women seeking help often face the following response from law enforcement: “We can’t do anything until blood is shed.”
In cases where the abusive party is sentenced to imprisonment, the legal system does not impose restraining orders upon their release to protect the previous victim. Such situations often end in tragedy: after he is set free, the aggressor frequently targets and murders not only their former partner but also their shared children.
