Intuition, routine, experience

On January 29, 2025, during the extinguishing of an apartment fire in Budapest, firefighters discovered the burnt body of a woman. For six days, the police treated the case as an accident, despite repeated efforts by the victim's acquaintances and a women's advocacy organization to draw attention to the suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman's death.

She had been abused, blackmailed, threatened, and lived in constant fear of her ex-husband. For years, reports about the abuse were repeatedly dismissed by the police, and assistance was denied. Following public pressure, the Budapest Police Department eventually launched an investigation.

At the first press conference held on the case, when asked how the suspicion of homicide had arisen, the police spokesperson responded: "This is what they call intuition. And routine, along with years of experience."
