Inner conviction

vegetable tanned leather,
polyester thread, caustic lye

2025

In 2013, the director of a Hungarian hospital attacked his ex-girlfriend in her own apartment out of revenge for breaking up with him. He tied her up, drugged her, placed her in the bathtub, and poured lye into her vagina. After this, he abandoned the woman to her fate.

Proceedings against the influential doctor were terminated within a few months thanks to his high-ranking political connections, and it was only years later, upon the victim’s repeated complaint, that the case was reopened. Over the course of a five year long legal procedure, burdened by corruption, the doctor was found guilty six times before he finally went to prison in 2018. During the process, which disregarded, blamed, and further traumatized the woman, the entire system stood firmly in defense of the suspect’s rights.

In 2025, a parole judge tried to grant conditional release to the man, who had served two-thirds of his sentence. The judge justified the decision based on the relevant laws and his “inner conviction”.
